Job Description:

The Heat Treater should be aware of the major functions that are required in order to assist in the smooth, efficient operation of the department and to ensure customers the highest quality possible.

Employees in this classification must be capable of performing a variety of duties in an efficient manner and within prescribed standards including setting up and operating all process and process testing equipment in Heat Treat, Paint, and Oiling area and using processing and problem solving skills. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

+ Assists the materials technician, as necessary, to resolve technical problems, and provides technical assistance to other employees in the department.

+ Notifies the supervisor immediately if any equipment is inoperative and submits work orders to the maintenance department as required.

+ Demonstrates the ability to identify problems, define them, and initiate action towards solving them.

+ Has completed the applicable heat treating courses or demonstrates equivalent skills gained through relevant experience.

+ Demonstrates the ability to perform hardening duties including specialized or new tool hardening jobs.

+ Run equipment to ensure a quality product is made.

+ Demonstrates the ability to assist in defining departmental procedures.

+ Demonstrates at least journeyman level skills in the use of all equipment in the department.

+ Demonstrates the ability to apply statistical process control techniques to new problems and processes.

+ Demonstrates the ability to analyze safety and housekeeping situations and recommend appropriate action.

+ Operates a variety of equipment such as furnaces, ovens, degreasers, conveyors, tumblers, and spinners.

+ Degreases parts prior to feeding into furnace, shipping, or before going on to the next operation.

+ Loads and unloads parts/material from process machines and equipment using baskets.

+ Chart and inspect parts on a regular basis for function and conformance to specifications.

+ Removes parts after prescribed time and quenches parts in water, oil, brine, and other baths or allows parts to cool in the air.

+ Oversees use of wet and dry tumblers for deburring, polishing, and degreasing parts per specifications.

+ Maintains charts to determine temperature, process, and findings.

+ Run multiple stations.

+ May set up and operate electric and gas equipment to heat objects.

+ Adjusts furnace controls and observes pyrometer to bring furnace to prescribed temperature.

+ Transports finished parts to proper department or location.

+ Cleans parts as needed in acid or annadex.

+ Tests hardness of parts.

+ Paints color code on part for identification.

+ Demonstrates the ability to use testing equipment such as but not limited to load test scales, Rochwell Scale, Viscosity Cup, protractor, etc.

+ Demonstrates the ability to load and unload furnaces, shot blast, paint baskets, and chemical finishing baskets.

+ Demonstrates the ability to operate the Lindberg ovens on occasion under the supervision of higher level employees.

+ Controls heat-treating furnaces, ovens, austemper, tanks, baths and quenching equipment to alter physical and chemical properties of metal.

+ Will use specifications and methods of controlled heating and cooling, such as hardening, tempering, annealing, case-hardening and normalizing.

+ Determines temperature and time of heating cycle.

+ Determines type and temperature of baths.

+ Determines quenching medium to attain specified hardness or toughness of parts.

+ Uses standard heat-treating charts and other records, utilizing knowledge of heat-treating methods, equipment and properties of metals.

+ Adjusts furnace controls and observes pyrometer to bring furnace to prescribed temperature.

+ Loads parts in bath or allows parts to cool in air.

+ Moves, obtains, and stores material, parts, supplies as required.

+ Operates grinding hearth.

+ Keeps work area clean and neat.

+ Abides by all rules and policies of the company, including conformance to good common sense safety practices and regulations.

+ Ability to maintain records.

+ Remove materials from furnace, immerse in chemical, water or oil bath for quenching.

+ Treat mixed lots and special metals having critical specifications.

+ Proceed with minimum supervisor or standardized and regular work; instructions and guidance provided on unusual and critical work or operating difficulties.

+ Work from specifications, charts and instructions.

Requirements

Education:

+ High School Diploma or GED; one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Training Requirements:

+ Experience in performing routine or repetitive tasks or operations which typically include following step-by-step instructions.

+ Must meet quality standard of the position.

+ Ability to understand route sheets, forms, inspection sheets, charts.

+ Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal situations.

+ Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all unites of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages.

+ Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral communication. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Job Knowledge Requirements:

+ Some knowledge of the various properties of metals.
