Description of Work
A Public Health Nurse, under general supervision, performs
comprehensive nursing services in preventive health, home health,
and clinic programs including assessment, diagnosis, teaching,
counseling, and prevention services to individuals, families, and
groups to promote health and wellness to clients and residents in
the county. An employee in this class exercises considerable
independent judgment in the performance of job duties, referring
only difficult or unusual problems to supervisory personnel for
clinical assistance. During a public health emergency, may be
required to report for specialized assigned duties or perform
emergency response roles, inside or outside Muskegon County.
Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications
1. Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or
university with a major in Nursing; ORPossess a Bachelor's degree
from an accredited college or university with any major; AND
Have a minimum of one (1) year of work experience in Public or
Community Health or related field; ORPossess an Associate's degree
from an accredited college or university in Applied Science (AAS)
Nursing; AND
Have a minimum of two (2) years of work experience in Public or
Community Health or related field.2. Possess and maintain a license
to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
3. Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
Physical Conditions / Work Location
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIESA Public Health Nurse performs generally
sedentary work activities requiring the lifting of objects weighing
thirty-five (35) pounds or less.ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
An employee in this class generally works at the Health Department,
various community sites, or in client homes. Travel to various
locations within the County may be required. This employee will be
exposed to blood and bodily fluids
Additional Information
EVALUATION CONTENTThe selected candidate must take a post-offer
medical examination (including back screen and complete physical)
and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician
before the first day of employment. An offer of employment is
contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug
screening test. Applicants for County employment may be subject to
a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and
assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer
of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal
background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a
probationary period before the appointment will be considered
permanent.APPLICANT REVIEW PROCEDUREAny applicant is entitled to a
review of any determination or action taken by the County regarding
the applicants employment application. Inquiries should be directed
to the County Human Resources Department.PURPOSEThe purpose of this
recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill
present and future vacancies in this classification in the County
system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of
the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance
qualifications. This list remains in effect for three months unless

Bargaining unit employees will be eligible for County benefitsthree
(3) calendar months after date of hire into a permanent position

Contribution (DC) plan through MERS of Michigan with 3% employer

Plan (HCSP) through MERS of Michigan, employer 3% contribution.
Vesting requirement of 6 years. Life Insurance and AD & D Equal to
employee annual salary to next highest $1,000. Max $200,000
Available at 90 days of continuous employment Sick Leave 10 days
annually accumulated at .385 days per pay period. Available upon
completion of six months of continuous eligible County service
Annual Leave 13 days, accumulated .500 hrs. per pay period.
Increasing to maximum of 24 days with 20 years of eligible County
service.
Available upon completion of six months of continuous eligible
County service. Sick/Annual Leave Cash Payout Employee may elect up
to 40 hours of accumulated vacation and/or sick time to be paid as
cash. Future accruals only. Personal Days 2 days per fiscal year,
unused days will be forfeited
Available upon hire Holidays 12 days
COLA/Longevity All employees are eligible for COLA based on the CPI
and must be in pay status as of 12/1. Payment of $150 after 3 years
of continuous service as of 12/1. Each subsequent year of service
will add $50 to the payment. Maximum payment amount is $1,250

Request for Educational Course 50% reimbursement for tuition and/or

eligible for the Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) &
Temporary Expanded PSLF (TEPSLF) programs. Eligibility is
determined by the U.S. Department of Education. Wellness Program
