Employment Type:Part timeShift:Description:Summary:This position
is designed for student nurses who have successfully completed two
semesters of nursing school. Under the direct supervision of a
Registered Nurse, the Nurse Extern participates in patient care as
delegated by the RN. Primary responsibilities may include
technical, multi-skilled direct and indirect patient care
activities. The Nurse Extern may not dispense medications by any
means/route and will maintain effective communication with the RN
in all matters pertaining to patient care. It is recognized that
specific patient care tasks may vary widely in type and frequency
from unit to unit or across service lines, based on the nature of
the patient population being served. Therefore, individual units,
or service lines, may appropriately add to or delete from the
duties as approved by nursing
administration.Qualifications:Education
Minimum High School graduate. Currently enrolled, and in good
standing, in an accredited school of nursing. Has successfully
completed two semesters of nursing school.
Preferred Additional requirements of course work dependent on area
of assignment
Credentials/Licensure
Minimum: BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support
Related Experience
Preferred: EMT, Paramedic, Nurse aide or CENA experience in a
health care setting; acute care experience preferred
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Good observational skills; mathematical ability to perform
calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division etc.; ability to perform routine clerical functions such
as answering telephones, taking messages and basic retrieval of
computerized information. Good reading, writing and comprehension
skills in order to understand, effectively communicate and
contribute to procedures, processes, orders, methods and standards.
Visual acuity and manual dexterity. A high level of interpersonal
and verbal skill and teamwork commitment in order to effectively
function as a team member in support of all services delivered on
the patient unit and to effectively communicate with patients,
their families and other hospital personnel to address customer
needs. Ability to adapt to new technologies used in the work
environment.
Preferred Ability to work productively and effectively within a
complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and deal
with stresses associated with a patient care environment such as
emergencies, time pressures, varying patient
emotions/attitudes/conditions, etc. Demonstrates willingness to
make a meaningful contribution to the work environment as evidenced
through behavior and attitude.Essential Functions:Collaborates with
members of the health care team to ensure consistency and
high-quality patient care and promotes productive
employee relations among staff members.
Documents interventions and patient responses accurately,
completely and timely (real time as per policy). Assists nursing
personnel
in responding to various emergency patient situations.
o Maintenance functional activities
o Dressing changes
o ECG
o Maintenance of enteral tubes
o Suctioning
o Blood glucose monitoring
o Assisting with postmortem care
o Phlebotomy
o Initiation of peripheral IV lines and urinary catheterization
o Monitoring and managing patient safety
training/abilities. Maintains confidentiality.
