This position serves our customers with a focus on cohesive quality from quoting through documentation. The result will be improved quality and customer satisfaction. This position description applies to engineering functions: engineering support function, engineering research oriented function, or both.
As support function, designs and documents new products based upon customer orders.
As research function, individual utilizes their technical background in one or all of the following:

  • Materials - Investigates use of/or develops use for new materials in Haworth products.
  • Processes - Investigates use of/or develops use for new processes at Haworth.
  • Products - Designs and develops new product concepts for Haworth.
    This is done to determine feasibility and the total cost structure to properly quote new products. Determines material, labor, and overhead costs. Works with Manufacturing Engineering to determine best manufacturing processes for new products. Works with Purchasing and/or suppliers to determine best source for new products. Works with Quality Assurance to ensure all quality aspects of product design and manufacturing are met by applying engineering principles under minimal supervision.
    RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS - Develops designs of moderate complexity from ideas or requirements as presented by engineer, needs statement, or project team, ensuring quality standards are met. - Develops engineering layouts for projects of moderate scope and complexity, using appropriate Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools (personal computer [PC] or workstation), via keyboard/mouse to accurately present design concept. Establishes initial multi-dimensional model base features, using tool. - Analyzes designs for proper form, fit, and function, including basic manufacturability, assembly, disassembly, and use, using CAD tools or calculator, to ensure design and documentation of new and existing products meets established quality and performance standards. Makes initial selection of materials, common or generic parts, and engineering standards for designs, using catalogs, reference books, or other product drawings. - Contacts customers, suppliers or manufacturing groups, via telephone or in person, to obtain information related to fabrication of prototypes, application of materials and processes, and selection of purchased parts. - Prepares engineering documentation, including Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), Bills of Material (BOMs), parts lists, engineering specifications, and other supporting forms, either manually, using PC word processing and spreadsheet tools, or CAD, to maintain clear project documentation. - Provides time estimates for design activities and task related progress reports for current design projects to make necessary adjustments to meet time requirements. - Investigation of materials to minimize labor and overhead costs. - Performs review of form, fit, and function of product designs by utilizing CAD and PCs, via keyboard/mouse. - Develops engineering detail and assembly documentation to support tooling quotations, manufacturing processes, and cost analysis for final product implementation. - Requests prototypes from outside suppliers, manufacturing, or model shop to be used for engineering performance and reliability testing. - Assembles prototype product using power and hand tools. Lifts/moves parts, weighing up to 60 pounds, during engineering evaluations to determine form, fit, and function. - Initiates and coordinates testing and analysis of materials, processes, and prototypes. Prepares test requests, monitors tests, and evaluates test performance to ensure adherence to agency and industry standards. - Contacts and, when necessary, visits customers, suppliers, agencies, and universities to obtain information relative to existing products, purchased parts, material selections, or manufacturing processes. - Maintains technical competency in area of expertise through reviews of published literature, interaction with academic institutions, with peers in professional societies, as well as with peers within supplier base.
    QUALIFICATIONS
    Education - Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering discipline or equivalent (equivalent is defined as equivalent degree OR job-specific work experience OR combination of education and job-specific work experience; two years job-specific work experience equals one year of formal education - NOTE: job-specific work experience used for education equivalency cannot also be used for work experience qualification). - CAD or PC design experience required. - Parametric-based systems CAD or PC design experience preferred.
    Work Experience - Experience in Engineering role (i.e., internship) preferred.
    Skills and Knowledge - Demonstrated ability to creatively design, analyze, and document product designs on multiple projects. - Design, development, and project management skills. - Ability for innovative technical accomplishments, as demonstrated through prior design drawings, patent awards, technical publications, and market success. - Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. - Demonstrated working knowledge of CAD (design) systems and analysis procedures; PC and keyboard/mouse skills required. - Ability to work cross-functionally to ensure products and materials produced meet functional requirements over life of product. - Ability to work in development-oriented team environment. - Must be knowledgeable of applicable global standards such as American National Standards Institute (ANSI) drafting practices, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT) and Canadian Government Test Standard (CGSB). - Ability to occasionally travel overnight away from corporate offices, including internationally.
